Maine has been a source of gem tourmaline for very close to 200 years with several historic finds throughout the two centuries. The cabochon in this necklace is from one of those: the 1972-1974 find at the Dunton Mine in Newry. During this find a ton of tourmaline was found by the Plumbago Mining Corporation, igniting a new era of gem mining in Maine.
This cabochon measures 6 mm and weighs 1.27 cts. The shape of Maine was handcut out of sterling silver by Jessie Mixer, a jewelry artist from Conway, NH.
